‘Houdini – The Unmasking’
24 x 30″. Deep-frame box canvas.
Original painting by Jay Fortune. DIRECT FROM THE STUDIO.
‘Known for his herculean power to escape any obstacle, I chose this image to paint as it captures a fascinating time in Houdini’s life; launching his book ‘The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin’, a critique of his once-idolized magical hero from whom he took his name. Without a handcuff in sight, this dark foreboding portrait captures the era of the séance room. The reversed chair, his hand on his new book and the resting of head on hand offer a unique insight of Houdini posing as an authority and intellectual – far removed from his usual pictures of nakedness and bondage.’
A black background with a monochrome palette. Black edges. Fully certified.
