Houdini ‘The Unmasking’

£325.00

Houdini ‘The Unmasking’

24 x 30 inches. Original painting on box canvas.

‘This painting depicts Harry Houdini (1874-1926) on the releasing of his book ‘The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin’. Houdin, known as the Father of Modern Magic, was a hero for Houdini. In his own autobiography, Robert-Houdin told tall tales of his own journey to becoming a master magician. One such tale was how the then young Robert-Houdin met a traveling magician called Torrini. So inspired, the then young Ehrich Weiss (Harry Houdini) borrowed the surname of his mentor and added the ‘i’ from Torrini, so create the name Houdini. (Harry comes from the Americanised version of Ehrich, being Harry.) However, Harry Houdini became disillusioned with his idol and wrote a book of criticism attacking the reputation of Robert-Houdin. In this painting, the book can be seen resting on Houdini’s knee.

This original portrait was created in several sessions across many days. The final painting is one I was quite tempted to keep! But a new home needs to be found, so am happy to let him escape my studio walls.’
